New Update: Medford Residents Evacuate, Roads Close As Police Investigate Bomb Threat

An unknown caller reportedly demanded a bag full of cash, threatening to bomb a business if he wishes were not fulfilled, officials say.

The area of 200 Mystic Avenue in Medford was closed the morning of Wednesday, July 5 because of a reported bomb threat, according to the Medford Police Department. 

An employee at City Check Cashing, located at 209 Mystic Avenue, called 911 around 8:50 a.m. reporting that the business had just received a threatening call from a man.

The man reportedly told the employee to put a large sum of money in a bag and drop it off at a nearby location. He threatened to place a bomb at the business if the employee did not do as instructed. 

Police responded to the scene and evacuated the business along with nearby businesses and residents. 

Massachusetts State Police and State Police Bomb Squad arrived and found no bomb or other threats on the premises during their search. 

Police announced that Mystic Avenue and its surrounding side streets were closed at Bowen Avenue and Golden Avenue around 9:20 a.m. 

The public is asked to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. 

Medford Fire Department and Armstrong Ambulance also responded.

This incident remains under investigation.
